How to recruit students at HBCUs

Discover what HBCU students value, what they have to offer, and how they want to engage with employers.

Born out of necessity—during a time in US history after the Civil War when Black students were denied equal access to educational institutions—historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are widely considered to be a doorway to post-graduate success.

🎓 Did you know? According to UNCF, HBCUs produce approximately 25% of all African American graduates with bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields.

A school strategy that expands access to opportunity for Black students should be inclusive of both HBCUs and non-HBCUs.

However, it’s important to distinguish what makes HBCUs such a special college experience for students, and what makes engaging with HBCU students and schools on the Handshake network unique.

With an emphasis on mentorship, internships, and other ways to participate actively in the larger community, HBCUs prepare students for life outside the classroom while offering a safe, nurturing, and inspiring environment—a place to thrive.

“I appreciate being at an HBCU not only because I was able to relate to a lot of people here, but I am also able to see Black people who are interested in the same things as me.”

—HBCU student, Mechanical Engineering, Class of 2023

HBCU students value personal relationships and authenticity—not transactional interactions with employers.
